From hostmaster at nyphp.com Thu Nov 12 13:35:17 2009 From: hostmaster at nyphp.com (New York PHP) Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2009 13:35:17 -0500 Subject: [nycphp-announce] next@bootup: Bootup 4, Nov 19th is More Than Just Web Message-ID: <034401ca63c6$e1b83260$a5289720$@com> We're pleased to announce Bootup #4, Nov. 19th at Sun Microsystems. Newsletter, details, RSVP and more at http://www.bootup.io/ - and we're not just about the web. Bootup events put startups in front of engineers and business professionals to create a forum for analysis, the technical pitch, and team building across disciplines. As always, Bootup events are free and open to the public. There's been a lot of progress and momentum since Bootup #3... The most exciting is that we're NOT WEB SPECIFIC. We've recognized the need for a forum that includes other important sectors - environmental, automotive, biotech, architectural, industrial, etc. - and we look forward to engaging these scenes, in addition to web startups. www.bootup.io now includes: -- newsletter sign-up and RSVP -- view past presentations -- partnership, intern and hyper-local chapter platform - see http://www.bootup.io/join-us -- and hey, we've got a cool favicon Plus much more to come - don't forget to RSVP and we'll let you know on the 19th. So what's happens when your server just can't handle the load? You cache it somewhere else, of course! With performance on our mind from last month's presentation, we're pleased to welcome Jorge Lopez to speak on the art and science of stuffing stuff you need to somewhere else (ie, caching). When scaling a web site from a few users to millions, the first pain point is almost always the database. Query optimizations only go so far, eventually data can no longer be retrieved from the database fast enough to accommodate the influx of client requests. This is the point where caching comes in to play. This presentation covers all the layers of a LAMP stack where caching can be utilized to greatly increase the capacity of a site. Subjects such as the utilization of CDNs, template/output cache, key/value stores, and shared memory (APC) will be covered. I discuss lessons learned from working at various companies and giving real world examples (and numbers) as well as a guide to figuring which parts of a site should be cached first. Jorge Lopez is a software engineer, cat lover, and avid PHP user since '98.
